Nutraceutical Products |
|
Nutraceutical implies that the extract or food is demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against a chronic disease. Dr. Stephen De Felice first coined the term nutraceutics in 1989 and he defined nutraceuticals as “food or parts of food that provide medical or health benefits including the prevention and treatment of diseases”. The term functional food is also used to refer nutraceuticals. In Canada and Great Britain, a functional food is essentially a food, but a nutraceutic is an isolated form or concentrated form. |

Many of the new products that are being promoted to treat various diseases find their origin in the plant kingdom. This is an obvious choice as many plants produce secondary compounds as alkaloids to protect themselves from infections and these constituents may be useful in the management of human infection. Many of the phytomedicines are the typical examples. |
|
The old proverb “an apple a day will keep the doctor away” is now replaced by “a nutraceutical a day may keep the doctor away”. Consumers are turning
massively to food supplements to improve well being where
pharmaceuticals fail.
Nutraceuticals have been proven to be effective over
many years of use. Encouraged by their obvious
benefits, scientific randomized controlled trial have
been carried out which have proven conclusively that
nutraceuticals are effective and safe. |
